Enjoy the Ride: Mountain Biking Trails in the Shoalhaven

If you’ve packed the bikes, you’ve landed in the perfect spot for a two wheeled adventure. The Shoalhaven is one of NSW’s upcoming regions for mountain biking, serving up trails that feel like mother nature’s very own theme park – minus the queues. With fast descents, rugged natural single track and coastal bushland rides all in one destination, it’s a playground for anyone who loves dirt, climbs and a good dose of fresh air. As a proud sponsor of the South Coast United Mountain Bikers Inc. (SCUM), Holiday Haven is all about supporting our local riding community and the epic trails they help champion. Stay with us and you’re perfectly placed to explore the best mountain bike trails in the Shoalhaven before kicking back lakeside or seaside each evening. Here’s your must‑ride trail lineup.

1. Fitzroy Falls to Kangaroo Valley Cycling Route

For riders who like their views big and their descents even bigger, the Fitzroy Falls to Kangaroo Valley route is a South Coast classic. This 30km one way adventure winds through Morton National Park, climbing up Meryla Pass before dropping into the Yarrunga Creek Valley for long, scenic stretches of forest riding.  Expect a few gates to lift your bike over, the chance to spot wombats and lyrebirds, and plenty of spots to pause for a photo or snack break. It’s challenging, beautiful and packed with Southern Highlands charm from start to finish.

2. Currambene State Forest

With 3 different trail networks, SCUM has something for everyone:

Coondoo Trail (Beginner to Intermediate)
Coondoo is one of the Shoalhaven’s true mountain biking gems. A flowy cross‑country loop tucked in the Nowra State Forest, it dishes up fast, swoopy single track, fun little features and just enough climbing to keep your legs honest, all wrapped in peaceful bushland that feels worlds away from everyday life. With a skills circuit and pump track at the trailhead, it’s the perfect warm‑up (or family‑friendly pit stop) before you hit the main loop.

Superbowl Trail (Beginner to Expert)
Superbowl is a purpose built favourite for riders chasing variety on the bike. It’s known for its Airflow network, a mix of smooth flow, rollers, and jumps designed to make you feel like you’re surfing dirt instead of riding it. It also offers a classic cross country loop, so you can switch between cruising and carving depending on your mood. Whether you’re chasing airtime or just want to ride something with personality, Superbowl dishes up good times in every direction.

Butterfly Trail (Intermediate)
Butterfly brings all the charm of old school mountain biking with its hand built single track, natural features and endlessly twisty bushland turns. Expect techy rock sections, short punchy climbs and a whole lot of character, this trail will keep you switched on from start to finish. It’s rugged, real and incredibly rewarding, making it a favourite for riders who love natural terrain and trails that feel untouched and authentic.

3. Conjola National Park

Heath Circuit
Heath Circuit is the kind of ride that makes you fall in love with the bush all over again. This 22km loop winds through Conjola National Park, starting and finishing in Cudmirrah, and serves up a full sampler of the region’s natural beauty. The unsealed, signposted fire trails make it an easy route to follow, and the mix of open stretches and shaded forest sections keeps things interesting from the first pedal stroke to the last. It’s a big ride, plan for around 6 hours, but the scenery more than earns the effort.  When you’re done, you can swing by Berrara Creek for a cool down or keep the adventure rolling with nearby routes like the Walter Hood ride from Cudmirrah or the Monument Beach ride from Bendalong.

4. Woodburn State Forest

Woodburn State Forest might be compact, but it packs a whole lot of fun into its 6km network of purpose built trails, all designed with variety and flow in mind. Crafted and maintained by the crew at the Milton Ulladulla Mountain Bikers & Mud MTB Club, this small but mighty network punches well above its weight for riders of all levels. The dedicated skills loop serves up a little bit of everything, from small rock drops to elevated wooden boardwalks, helping riders build confidence before tackling the main trails. It’s the perfect spot for beginners or intermediate riders chasing a quick, fun session just south of Ulladulla.

Safety Tips Before You Ride

  • Check the weather – rain can make trails slippery, sandy or muddy, and conditions can change quickly in the bush.
  • Look up current track conditions through local clubs or park updates before heading out.
  • Ride to the conditions and stay within your ability, especially on technical features, boardwalks and rocky sections.
  • Pack the essentials – water, sunscreen, a charged phone and basic tools make all the difference on longer loops.
  • Be aware of reduced reception in forested and remote areas.
