5 Whale Watching Spots in the Shoalhaven

10 Jul 2018

Here in the Shoalhaven on NSW’s South Coast we are spoilt for choice for vantage points from which to watch the annual whale migration. With the whale watching season running from May - November each year, it’s the perfect reason to plan a winter getaway. You can watch the whales (and dolphins) from numerous land based spots on the Shoalhaven coast, or get out on the water for a really up close adventure.

The Holiday Haven top 5 whale watching spots in the Shoalhaven:

  1. Warden Head, Ulladulla

Warden Head Lighthouse in Ulladulla offers a perfect spot to spy clusters of frolicking whales. The lighthouse is only 5 minutes from Ulladulla itself and is an amazing backdrop for an al fresco lunch or brunch. During the annual whale migration it is possible to view whales quite clearly - so don’t forget the camera.

  1. Point Perpendicular, Beecroft Peninsula

One of our favourite whale viewing spots in the Shoalhaven would have to be the Point Perpendicular Lighthouse which is on the southern end of Beecroft Peninsula. This spot ticks all the boxes - historic lighthouse, breathtaking views of Jervis Bay, and crystal clear water which is ideal for watching the whales at play.

  1. Crookhaven Heads

This is where we make an entire day of whale watching. Start here, at the northern end of the beach at Crookhaven Heads (yep there’s a lighthouse there too) and watch out for the whales and then….

  1. Penguin Head, Culburra Beach

Take a walk southward along the length of Culburra Beach to Penguin Head - here you can take in even more whales as they often travel both north and south at this point

  1. Jervis Bay Marine Park

Get out on the water to watch the whales with one of the whale and dolphin tours available with most departing from Huskisson or Ulladulla. Our picks:

Of course, we recommend staying at one of our twelve tourist parks to make the most of your time whale watching in the Shoalhaven. To learn more just contact our friendly team.
