Park Profile: Currarong

Holiday Haven
27 Oct 2022

Jervis Bay is one of the Shoalhaven’s natural wonderlands – home to a marine park, stunning unique vistas and impossibly white sands. The small village of Currarong sits on the ‘top lip’ of the bay’s arc – Beecroft Peninsula – facing north to the ocean and within easy reach of the Point Perpendicular Lighthouse and popular walking tracks. Easy to access by road, once you arrive in this coastal village, the holiday vibes are perfect for camping, caravaning, cabins or RVs. You simply can’t go wrong with Currarong!

Your Holiday Haven

Holiday Haven Currarong has been situated with the water in mind – giving you direct access not only to the popular swimming spot of Currarong Creek but also through to the beach itself, with its surf-friendly waves.

Accommodation options at the park include eight different types of cabin (including accessible cabins) – sleeping up to six. All cabins feature a covered front seating area, with the larger ones offering a family-sized deck and views of the creek. If you’re bringing your accommodation with you (tents, campers or caravans), there are also plenty of powered, unpowered and ensuite sites throughout the Park. Oh, and dogs are welcome!

Kids will love the outdoor options too – with a new swimming pool, splash pad and jumping pillow all located adjacent to each other for easy supervision. In this same ‘play precinct’, you’ll also find mini golf, a tennis court and a playground – as well as holiday favourites such as kayak and SUP hire, BBQs and an outdoor cinema. No wonder families love it here!

The park sits right alongside the creek, which itself meanders out to sea alongside the beach. This combo of sheltered river swimming and splashtastic ocean waves makes for a versatile offering – take your pick or do both, there’s no rush!

Currarong Surf School

Local Attractions

To look at it on a map, Currarong is a small oasis surrounded by bush and ocean – and that’s part of the appeal. The village is an easy walk, but if you’re after a caffeine hit to start your day, the Park’s own Little Shop kiosk can hook you up.

Currarong is a great place to learn to surf – and to prove it, there’s even a surf school to get you up and riding the friendly waves in no time. Group or private lessons for all ages and skill levels – yewww will love it!

Meanwhile, kayak and paddle boarders will be in heaven – with some of the cleanest water you will ever find and no less than 14 white sandy beaches on the peninsula to choose from (but check first as many are only open weekends and school holidays due to naval training). Beaches include the stunning bay-facing Long Beach, Cabbage Tree Beach and Honeymoon Bay (a perfectly horseshoe-shaped pocket beach) as well as oceanside options dotted along the Abraham’s Bosom walking track, which starts on the edge of Currarong village.

Jervis Bay Wild

One of the most popular attractions along these walking tracks is Gosangs Tunnel – a must-do while you’re in the area (although access has been restricted recently, so check first). The walk is around an hour return from the start at Abrahams Bosom beach, with a 20m tunnel that leads you out to a stunning “shelf” among the pancake-like rock formations above the crashing waves below.

Also iconic is the 1898-built Point Perpendicular Lighthouse – a short drive from Currarong and a great way to get an insight into the history of this area. The point of course gets its name from the rugged vertical cliffs that dominate this corner of the coastline. Jervis Bay Wild offers a cruise that allows you to see it up close, from the water.

And if all that exploring has made you hungry, settle in to Zac’s Place in the village for some of the best fish and chips you’ll taste. Zac’s is open for lunch every day and dinner Friday-Sunday.
