Park Profile: Lake Tabourie

If you’re looking for everything that makes a coastal getaway great, it’s hard to go past our southern most Park for choice. Positioned between a river mouth and the ocean, with both a National Park and your very own island on your doorstep. Lake Tabourie offers a little something for everyone.
 

Your Holiday Haven

Geographically, Holiday Haven Lake Tabourie can’t get much closer to water if it tried – positioned on a ‘one-road-in-and-out’ sandy point at a river mouth leading into the ocean. Its namesake lake and township are both nearby – but from the moment you arrive, you’ll feel like you’re in your own secluded haven!

And it’s easy to see why – with the 12-hectare park completely surrounded by either bush, sand and water. But that’s where the ‘desert island’ comparisons end, with plenty of modern accommodation options to choose from including 10 different types of beach houses or cabins and a mix of powered, unpowered and ensuite sites for your tents or caravan (many overlooking the water).

Bringing your four-legged family member? Not a problem – this Park is doggo friendly. Other Park facilities include communal kitchen and BBQs, splash pad and solar heated swimming pool, jumping pillow, BMX pump track, shop and tennis court. And with direct access to surf nearby waves or safe swimming in the creek, there’ll be something new to discover every day.

Local Attractions

With so many of the cabins and sites offering either direct or nearby views to the oceans (whale migration from your balcony, anyone?), it’s tempting to sit back with a cuppa and a good book. But once you’ve had a few hours of that, why not explore the local area?

Perhaps the most obvious landmark beckoning you is Crampton Island – a fishing and snorkelling wonderland that can be reached at low tide. Meanwhile, across the river, ‘choo choo choose’ to spend some time at the South Coast Railway History Museum at Lake Tabourie township – it’s open twice a month and includes a model railway for the little and big kids to enjoy!

Hungry? Enjoy casual dining, wine, craft beer and cheese tasting in pastoral surroundings at the popular nearby Cupitts Estate – just a short drive north. Or during the summer months, head south to pick your own berries at Clyde River Berry Farm, or simply pick up a punnet, jam-packed jar (of jam) or berry delicious icecream.

Keen for a wilder day out? Keep driving south to Mogo Wildlife Park – a charming private sanctuary for exotic and endangered animals. The zoo itself was endangered and nearly lost during the 2019/20 bushfires, so the team would love to welcome you during your stay!

And see that summit up in there to the west? That’s Pigeon House Mountain Didthul – a challenging but rewarding walk (sunrise is particularly impressive if you’re keen!). One of the highlights and high points of Morton National Park. Or, if you like “long walks on the beach”, 5km-long Wairo Beach – just 2 minutes from your accommodation – is the ideal place to gather your thoughts.
